Services: Custom School Programs

Carl Closs's real passion is helping students discover George Washington. His entertaining stories incorporate messages about moral character and values that endure long after a class visit or school assembly is over. And as a former educator, Carl knows the importance of customizing his program to meet the needs of you and your students. Sample full-day and half-day programs are described below.

General Washington Portrayed by Carl Closs - School Events

Option 1: Full-day School Program

The specific details of the full day program are tailored to the needs and desires of the school.  However, it is usually divided into three or four parts as follows:

  1. The General will conduct an Assembly for the entire school population, which may include home-schooled students and parents if you desire. This usually involves a school band if available, a flag ceremony, special guests, news media coverage, etc., and the dedication of a portrait of General Washington.  (Rembrandt Peale - framed print).

  2. Essay Contest winners dine with “The General.”  (A maximum of ten students selected as the winners.)

  3. The General will visit the classes of one specific grade for a period each.* This will be in an interactive manner, which may be in any of the following formats that you desire.

  • A question/answer period without any specific focus.

  • A presentation followed by questions.

  • A specific topic of discussion with the General as the moderator/participator, perhaps with desks arranged in a circular fashion. Any of these formats will make history come-alive.

  1. The General will attend a “Faculty Appreciation Tea” at the end of the school day.  (Optional)

* If desired, two classes may-be combined and the time-period extended to two periods (The works well with a specific topic of discussion where the General serves as a moderator.). The General is open to any other format that is feasible.

Option 2: Half-day School Program

The specific details of the half-day program are tailored to the needs and desires of the school.  This may require two separate school programs on the same day.  However, the program is divided into two parts as follows:

  1. The General will conduct an Assembly for the entire school population, which may include home-schooled students and parents if you wish. This usually involves a school band if available, a flag ceremony, special guests, news media coverage, etc., and the dedication of a portrait of General Washington. (Rembrandt Peale – framed print)

  2. An interactive one-hour living history discussion with “the General” (as he was affectionately known). The General will meet with one entire grade, gathered together, in order to answer their questions.

Whether a full day or a half-day program, Carl is always ready to discuss ways of enhancing this experience for your students.
